Building Relationships With Your Students

Having a relationship on a somewhat personal level is important for both the teachers and students. I think if a relationship is present it can be advantageous for both groups.  The students will feel like the teacher cares and I think respect will him/her a lot more.  This close relationship will be beneficial for teachers because it will allow them to have a better understanding of the kids, and also build respect. From my own experience, when a teacher tried to be “cool” with my peers and I we were more likely to turn in homework, participate in discussion, etc.  These relationships can make school pleasurable.

I don’t think it will always be easy to form this relationship because there might be some children who are hard to get know for any reasons (i.e. shy).  I came across this website: http://www.nea.org/tools/51057.htm  The website suggests a few ways teachers can work on building these kinds of positive relationships.

Do you feel the same way as I do or do you think that teacher’s should be “strictly down to business”? Whatever your stance is, why do you think you feel this way?

  1. I completely agree! A relationship with our students is vital to both our job and their learning. I can think of so many instances where one of my teachers as a youngster never tried to really understand me or my fellow classmates and because of that, we didn't try hard in those classrooms. By fostering a positive relationship with your kids, you are ensuring that you will create a circle of reciprocity in your classroom. What drew me to teaching is the warmth and caring that is inherent to the profession. I don't plan on being "strictly down to business" in my future classroom and I hope I never have to.
