Education: A Debt Sentence

As most of know all too well, college is expensive. Some of us are paying for it, others have loans, and the lucky some have scholarships. It still does not make sense that we have to pay a ridiculous amount just to get an education. I get that going on to advanced education is a privilege, but the expense that comes from trying to obtain a degree has become absolutely crazy! The worst part is, the cost just keeps going up, with student loan interest rates doubling. How are we as Americans expected to be able to pay for a degree that is going to take some people 10+ years to pay off. Going into the education field we already know and are prepared that we will not be making the most salary, so what sense does it make to have students pay 30,000+ in education when as a teacher we will barely make over that in our first few years of teaching? As you can tell this is something that I feel very strongly about, but it just doesn't make any sense to me. The following link is to a website, rather than an article, but it is a "campaign" about how education should be a debt sentence.

There are plenty of things on this page to explore, but I think that it is an amazing website that goes into detail and has the support of students also agreeing that the amount we pay for education is ridiculous.

  1. You raise some interesting and potentially very valid points--I say potentially because I'm not terribly familiar with licensure in Ohio/at OSU. I hope you realize, though, the power of your voice. Are you sharing your thoughts with decision-makers at OSU? Do you know who they are? Ultimately, OSU is a land-grant, state-run institution. As a tax payer and as a student, your opinion matters.

It might be that OSU's current system was designed to help graduates appear more attractive than their competition when they arrived on the job market. I don't know! You could be entirely right that it's motivated only by tuition dollars. Maybe it's a third thing (or a mix of things) all together. But there is an answer. And you deserve it.

  2. Kamry, I share the same frustrations! I feel that a lot is expected of students academically and financially and it is often discouraging to me that I will not making enough money to cover my debt. Thanks for sharing this site!
