Just a Checkpoint?

Education has become a significant part of children's lives, but why? From personal experience all I know is that we go to school because we have to. From day one in kindergarten we are told we have to go to school. Our parents tell us, our teachers tell us, and the government surely makes it a point that children must be in school. Now that I am a little older and I can think for myself, and choose the path of education I want to take, it makes me think about what the purpose of education really is. Is it just a checkpoint in our lives? I think that to some extent it is just a checkpoint. Like I said before the importance of school is engraved in to our minds from such a young age that it becomes a habit and just something that everybody does. On the other hand, it is more than just a checkpoint. I want to further my education to better myself. I feel that if I don't continue to gain knowledge then someone else out there will be, and in the end will be better off than me when it comes to jobs and overall self sustainability. In this article http://www.educationpurpose.org/ the author talks about what the purpose of education is, and a major part of their definition is change/growth. I know that by continuing my education I will grow as a person and in the end will be better off when it comes to society and life itself. After all how would society continue to change and grow if the people a part of it didn't?

  2. You make several good point in school being a checkpoint and something we are told we have to do at a young age. I feel also that if you are here in college, that you should be here to better yourself and become prepared for the future. By this time in our life like you said you are older now a little older and can think for yourself, if people do not speak up about their decision on if they want to go to college. Most likely they will not be successful. So I totally agree, that we people need to continue to grow that way we are not left behind as our society moves on.

  4. Amanda, I really like your blog post! I agree with you about going to school now because you want to further your education. Personal, that is the same reason I am too, I am going to college to help me focus on learning the skills to specialize in education so I can become a teacher. I think that is exactly what college is for to specialize in an area you are really good at so eventually you can get a job doing that. It goes with our discussion on Wednesday about how in elementary school everyone is learning the exact same thing and we are learning a broad topic of a little of everything. This is so when it comes time for college we know what we like and what we want to go into possible. Like you said and Ross above me stated when you reach college you are an adult, you get to decided what you want to do. If you chose to go to college it is most likely to help better yourself, so you can eventually be really good at your job.
I also liked your point though of what school looks like to a smaller child say someone who is in elementary school. (At this age you are required like you said to go to school.) When you are younger school does seem like a checkpoint. It is just something you have to go to Monday through Friday for a set amount of hours. I never really thought to question it because it is what everyone does and did. You went to school to learn and you didn't question it. It has just become the norm of society.

  5. I agree with you Amanda! I definitely have always felt like I HAD to go to college after high school. I mean, what the heck else was I supposed to do? I don't think feeling like school is a necessity is a bad thing because we are lucky enough to get the chance to go! Although, I do think it is bad that students are not learning as much as they could be because of the emphasis on testing. The strict curriculum prevents students to explore other subjects because they're "less important." I think it is very sad.
