Positive Teacher-Student Relationships

We've talked about having at least one teacher that was very special to us and impacted us in many ways. For some, their teachers inspired them to become teachers themselves. In the film To Sir, With Love, we were able to see how developing relationships with students can make a huge difference in how students behave, how they learn, and how they perceive things
I liked how he set high expectations for his students as far as their behavior. Once he demanded respect he got it, but he also gave them respect which raised the student's self esteem.

I found an article that touched on some of these points as a recipe for having positive teacher-student relationships. The four major ingredients were:

  1. Showing empathy and compassion
  2. Being a safe person
  3. Knowing your students as individuals
  4. Setting high learning and behavioral expectations
Which of these ingredients are most important to you? I think #1 and #3 really impacted me the most. My relationship with my favorite teachers blossomed from being just a student to them becoming my mentor, coach, counselor, and eventually friend after graduation, all in one. Their support is incredible and I know I can come to them for anything!
