Evaluating Teachers.
So today I had an interview with a principal at an Upper Arlington elementary school. As we were talking, she mentioned that a lot of her time is spent evaluating the teachers for OTES (Ohio Teacher Evaluation System). If you click on the link you will find out about OTES and that it evaluates student academic growth and teacher performance: growth plan, observations (two- 30 minutes each), and walkthroughs. Although the principal said she doesn't like that a lot of her time is spent in meetings and evaluating teachers, she did say that teachers should be evaluated each year. What she did not like about the evaluations was that it was too much work for one person (the principal) to do each year. I'm not exactly sure what I think about this.. I know we need to be
accountable for our teaching but should a lot of your performance be
based on two 30 minute observations?.. what if you are having a bad day?
As future teachers, what do you guys think about being evaluated each year?

I agree that there needs to be some kind of measure taken to see if a teacher is doing his or her job right. I also agree that it shouldn't be based on two 30 minute observations because like you said that one day the teacher gets to prove her ability to teach well something could come up making her look like shes a poor teacher. This is so frustrating as a student wanting to pursue a job in the education field. I understand there are a lot of teachers and only few principals for the limited observations, but there has to be another way.I don't really know another way to measure this, but something needs to change. More time needs to be put in the OTES process. I'm sure we are not the only ones who think this.
