My purpose of education

After discussing the purpose of education in class, I got to thinking what my purpose of education is. I thought back to what others had said, and could not come up with a clear definition of what I think the purpose of education was. I agree that the purpose of education is a journey of finding out who you are and growing up and becoming the individual you want to be. However, if I am going to be honest I think the purpose of education for me would be setting up the building blocks for me to be successful is life. This all begins from the moment we start school. Even in are early years of school it's important for all of us to learn the basics. In class, someone said it perfectly, elementary years are the "buffet table" of our education. We go through the line and pick out the information that we believe will help guide us into the future we would enjoy. I found an article about the purpose of education. http://mlk-kpp01.stanford.edu/index.php/encyclopedia/documentsentry/doc_470200_000/. After reading this article, I found it very helpful in finding my purpose of education. The article states that "education must set us up for quick, resolute, and effective thinking." I would agree with statement because education must set us up to be successful in life. Education set us up for success not only for the work field, but also when it comes to personal relationships. The being of school gives us the key values of how to work well with others, and also how to make friends and build relationships. So overall my definition of the purpose of education would be building the blocks in your life to become successful and have a happy life that would wake up everyday happy to be where you are.

  1. I couldn't agree more! It's such a hard thing for us to define because we've never really took the time to stop and ask ourselves why we got to school and what it means. Of course when we're younger (and maybe even now) our parents force us to go. However, that's not (or shouldn't be) the point of school at all! School is most certainly used as a building block for our future. But during those years of building blocks we're discovering so much more than just the foundation of our intelligence. It should be a "fun" way to work towards our future to make it into something we truly do enjoy!
