The Personal Aspects of Education

A good number of students these days see education as a stepping stone to something else, or just another box to check off in the end. I'm not proud of it but I'm one of these people. Taking everything in stride and enjoying the moment instead of looking to the next thing, and the next thing is a difficult thing to do. Even my sense of purpose in going through the school system boggles my mind. I'm not the type of person who loves school and wants to be there all the time. Therefore, keeping this in mind, when asked in class what my personal purpose in education is, I had no idea. To me, this isn't something I've thought about but after hearing what some of my peers had to say, I found myself building a bit better of an idea in my head. Education has helped me find my strengths and weaknesses as a person, and in discovering these characteristics, it's also helped me to see what kind of teacher I would be and what strategies I could possibly implement in order to control the students in my class. Moreover, education has also helped become a more rounded person. This article I read talks about a couple purposes of education: http://www.thedailyriff.com/articles/ruminations-by-sir-ken-robinson-624.php. He mentions that education is cultural. I agree with his comments about this because I feel that education has helped me connect with people in my community with different cultures, religions, etc., and it provided a common ground to not only interact with them, but to learn from them as well. After thinking for a bit about my opinion of the purpose of education, I settled on the fact that I don't really know what the purpose is. For now, I'm just trying to enjoy the moment and to not look too far ahead!

Before I had read your post, I hadn't thought about discussing the ways education has helped people see what kind of teachers they want to be. I also want to be a teacher and I agree with you that we need to look at strategies to use on our students. I don't think it is wrong that you don't have a set answer to what the purpose of educaiton is. As long as you are open to exploring new ideas regarding the topic, enjoying your education, and discovering yourself and what you can do for your students in the future, I think you and everyone else in the same position are on the right track to figuring it all out in time!
