Overcoming Other Issues In the School

Teaching and testing are not the only worries teachers have to deal with.  Problems of bullying, gangs, drugs, behavioral issues are only just a few examples. These problems are not only an issue for just the teacher but also the student who is experiencing this. This link:  http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/09/17/why-i-dropped-out_n_3941899.html?utm_hp_ref=@education123  described by a teenage boy who was going through some of these problems during his adolescent years.  He feared going to school which later caused him to drop out.

As a teacher, I think it’s important to get involved with these issues that are occurring at school.  A student should not be scared to go to school.  How could a teacher make this fear decrease? As I mentioned last week, I think a relationship between the student and teachers is essential.  By having a relationship will allow students to share what they are feeling and then the teacher could help them come up with some solution.  What other ways do you think we could help alleviate these problems?

I agree that it is important for teachers to get involved with issues occurring at school. However, we need to find ways to do so that wouldn't be crossing the boundaries too far into a student'a personal life. A relationship between a student and teacher is essential and if we can find ways to strengthen that relationship without using too much class time students would feel safer at school and teachers would know their students on a deeper level. Teachers already have "conferences" with students at schools. Maybe they can have something like that every week but call it a minute meeting where the student can talk about anything they want with the teacher, not just schoolwork?
