The link to this article and video interview a classroom of students who love their Physics teacher in Louisville, KY. Students mention how they enjoy to be in class and it is due to the fact that their teacher, Mr. Wright, makes learning interesting and engaging. They also say how they are going to always remember him when they are older. Mr. Wright explains that if he can get his students to ask "why?" while they are in class it will keep them intrigued in learning. The students feel as though their teacher actually cares about them and what they learn, not just getting through the curriculum.

Inspirational Teachers
Part of our discussion in class was about whether or not the majority of students come into school with a passion for what they are learning or if it is the teachers who get them excited about learning. From my own experience, I believe that is is the teachers who inspire and the students. While I was in high school I had a chemistry teacher who was one of the best instructors I have ever had. I remember being excited to attend class each day and actually wanting to learn about chemistry (I hate chemistry). I also had a teacher in elementary school who had such an impact on my life in terms of reading, that my love for it has carried on even today. I believe that there are many teachers who are good instructors, but it takes a special person to draw the most potential out of their arts about students and that is one of the hardest parts about teaching. Part of the reason I wanted to go into teaching was so that I could have the same impact on my own students lives.

I agree with you, Burrell. Like the lady in the TED talk on Wednesday said, "Kids don't learn from people they don't like." Your article and anecdotal evidence support that sentiment. Learning is much easier when class time is looked forward to as opposed to dreaded (as I'm sure many of our classes have been). I believe much of this has to do with what school represents in the mindsets of students, and the teacher plays a large role in that. School can be either an adventure or a chore, and often the teacher tips the balance more than anything else.
ReplyDeleteI definitely see what you're saying here Jasmine, and I think you're completely right. Even some of my friends from high school will complain about a class and the only reason I ever get for why they don't like the class is because they dislike the teacher. It's not exciting or even fun to learn about topics in school from someone who sometimes seems like he or she doesn't want to be there any more than you do. I think that in order to really learn and retain information, the teacher has to be passionate about the subject they're teaching, because passion can be contagious!
