Project RESPECT

I found this article online entitled "The Promise of RESPECT: A Teacher's View on Transforming the Profession" from the Huffington Post (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/teach-plus/the-promise-of-respect-a-_b_1294814.html)written about a year and a half ago. The article was written in the perspective of a teacher and her view on how teachers are prepared and treated in society. She mentioned that teachers aren't prepared to be in the classroom as well as they should be and in return the students are impacted. She also says "Teaching is not respected as a profession and teachers are not respected as professionals". These issues along with many others were supposed to be taken care of through this so called project RESPECT which is "aimed at elevating the teaching profession". Reading this article I was happy to see that some action is being taken on what I see as a serious issue. The way teachers are treated and respected in this country is just unacceptable. Since the whole schooling system revolves around the profession of teaching I would say it is pretty important. Not to mention the fact that without schooling we, as Americans, wouldn't be able to achieve as much as we do when it comes to scientific, industrial, commercial, etc improvements. We all have to learn somewhere right? So why is teaching one of the lowest paying jobs? Why is there the saying "Those that can't do teach"? These are questions that I, as a future teacher, are confused by especially knowing that in other countries teachers are such well respected individuals in society. All in all, I am totally on board for increasing the level of respect of teachers in society, but I also haven't heard anything regarding this project RESPECT before, so I think it is going to be quite a long process that some may not realize.

  1. I agree with you 100%. I am tired of telling people I want to become a teacher and there responses are "you're going to be poor". I am really glad they are trying to get more respect for teachers. They have a huge responsibility.

  2. Jessica, I've had the same reaction when telling people that I'm going to be a teacher! It really gets annoying after a while. I also am bother by the saying that Amanda mentioned, "those that can't do, teach." Do people even realize how that sounds? I mean if there weren't good teachers and people willing to take the disrespect and low title, where would "those who CAN do" be at? How do you think people with high, prestigious titles got where they are? -- education. And I'm pretty sure if they had ineffective teachers which caused their performance to suffer, they probably wouldn't have made it that far.
