I came across this article that talked about some of the advantages to homeschooling and it got me thinking how a lot of the points are valid. I think for some children home schooling is the way to go! One point was the teacher to student ratio, I found this to be very interesting seeing that many parents complain about how large classes are at public schools and how hard it is for their child to receive the proper attention in class. In a home schooled environment this would not happen because many parents are the one teaching their child or the child is learning through a program that is designed to help them through their teaching. This would make it much easier for a child to receive the attention they need and the help they need in certain areas. Another point that I found interesting that would go along with some of the things we have talked about is that the education can be tailored. By this the article means that if the child is really good at math they can move along at a faster pace in this or if they struggle in reading they can slow down and focus more on this subject. I thought this was interesting because in a public school a teacher can only slow down so much to help a student if they are struggling. Sometimes so many students are struggling that some get overlooked and the teacher moves on without realizing she missed someone. This can happen when a teacher is teaching a class of close to 30+ students which goes back to the argument that some classrooms are just to large. A teacher in a public school also has a hard time challenging some students when the regular work for a subject area is to easy for them. When a students is home-schooled though the pace is all about whatever that one child needs. In the end it would allow for the child to better understand the material. Another interesting thing about home schooling is that children can be involved in art and music if the parent or program that they are learning from wants them to be. In public schools art and music is disappearing more and more. When a student is home schooled this can be included in the curriculum in order to give the child a balance in all subjects.
I also found it interesting that this article states that home-schooled children score better on tests which I think is larger due to the fact that they can learn at a pace that is comfortable to them therefore being able to retain more of the information. If there is a push for more children to do well on standardizing testing maybe some of the techniques used in home-school should be looked at to see if they could possible be implemented into public schools. Not sure how easy this would be just a thought. Below I have attached the article though and I would love to hear any feed back anyone has on whether or not they think homeschooling is the way to go.
Recently I have looked into homeschooling, because my mom is retiring from teaching is trying to convince me to let her be my daughters teacher. some of the things that I found interesting is the fact that homeschooling is a shorter day then regular school because you take out all of the time used on unnecessary distractions. Like kids getting out of control and the teacher having to take time away from teaching to calm them down, or even like you said having to slow down because someone doesn't understand. Another thing that i see as a benefit to home schooling is children get to hold on to their creativity and imagination longer. They also have more time to explore what they really love, and i think that helps then later in life when they have to decide on what they want to do. children who are homeschooled I think also have a better relationship with their families simply because they are around them more and there is less people influencing their beliefs.
