Are teachers professionals?
The question of whether or not teachers are professionals and should be treated, and expected to act as professionals, seems strange to me. As the daughter of two teachers, I have always looked at both my parents as professionals and they certainly dressed and acted like them in the classroom as well. However, many other professionals don't respect teachers as they would other professionals. I'm not sure why it's like this in our country as I had many teachers throughout high school with masters and doctorates that went to school for the same amount of time as plenty of lawyers and doctors I knew. I find it sad to me because these doctors and lawyers never would've gotten their english, math and science basics to go into these professions if it weren't for teachers. Hearing speakers from other countries speak about how teaching is regarded in their home countries helped me gain some perspective on this topic as well. I think it's a shame we can't treat teachers the way we heard they're treated in India and even Japan. I couldn't agree more! Whenever I hear someone talking poorly about teachers I can't help but think to say, you wouldn't be making a living without teachers. You wouldn't be reading, writing, articulating sentences with correct vocabulary, the list could go on forever. Now sure there are bad teachers out there, but there are terrible doctors and lawyers too! Just because you find a few bad ones doesn't mean you can generalize the entire group as unprofessional and unworthy.
ReplyDeleteI agree as well, this country when it comes to a teacher, really doesnt respect teachers enough. Teachers are what help got every single person where they are today. Everyone, no matter what profession they are in had teachers that helped them get that job. This country needs to really learn that teaching is a very professional occupation.
ReplyDeleteI think it's insane! I don't know why anyone would downgrade a teacher, she/he is building the future! If anything, the teachers should be respected. Like you said teachers have allowed the lawyers to become lawyers, doctors to become doctors, etc. They had to be taught in school at some point! It's very frustrating.
