Charter School Lotteries
I recently read an article by Fiona O'Sullivan about charter school lotteries. (http://www.care2.com/causes/charter-lotteries-leave-lots-behind.html) Through test scores and data we can see that charter schools are successfully educating their students. I personally think the problem with charter schools lies within their admissions processes. First, parents send in the application for their child. This leaves out children who are from less stable families, are homeless, have parents who are physically unable to apply, have parents who do not care, or have parents who are unaware how to apply. The charter schools themsevlves decide how to get the word out about their schools and they can leave out certain places and people who they do not want to apply. Also, evidence has shown that many charter schools in this country have a racial imblance, and they do not cater to all demographic groups equally. Even if you are selected from the lottery, that does not always mean you will stay at the school. Those who own or operate the school end up deciding if you stay because disruptive students and those who struggle academically may have to leave the school. So, it is easy for these charter schools to turn out high test scores when their student population is skewed. I think we need to come up with policies for the system that allows an equal opportunity for all children.
