What are Issues 50 and 51? This FAQ sheet does a great job highlighting its cause. I wanted to point out how voting in favor of these issues will install an independent auditor that will ensure the fraud that Professor Glassman spoke briefly about in one of our class discussions. Columbus City School's data were being altered to produce a false image of performance and attendance. To clarify a question posed in class, the superintendent that was in charge at the time (Gene Harris) did retire after the scandal was discovered. My mother, who was a teacher assistant and this year a librarian, told me she met the new superintendent last week. He was going around the schools meeting people and she said how nice he seemed. Hopefully he can help turn around the corruption of Columbus City Schools.
The Education Plan benefits Franklin County's Community schools but will not interfere with the high performing Columbus City Schools. This made me question, well what about the poor performing schools? These community schools are strategically located in areas where good schools are desperately needed.
The purpose of this levy is to:
- Make sure high performing schools serve every neighborhood
- Hire, train, and keep better teachers and principals
- Improve technology in the classroom
- Install an independent auditor to root out waste, fraud and abuse.
I'm going to talk Issues 50 & 51 over with my mom before voting but it seems like the bigger purpose of the ballot is supporting education equality for all students... and that's what I want the most in education reform.
