Evaluating Teachers
This week in class we talked about teacher evaluations and the difference between prescriptive and descriptive evaluations. Personally, I don't see a point in evaluating teachers and rating them and then not sharing what they can do to improve their effectiveness in a classroom. Also, what really makes a good teacher? Everyone has a different opinion on this and therefore, how can one person randomly come into your class one day and determine whether or not you're a good, effective teacher? They can't, that's part of the problem. Also, it's difficult to evaluate a teacher when back to my other point, there are different standards at each school. In order to take anything away from evaluations, the standards for teachers have to be the same across the school boards. This article talks about these issues as well and suggests some possible solutions to improve the evaluations of teachers:http://www.edutopia.org/blog/teacher-evaluation-berkeley-panel

I definitely agree. I think some type of an evaluation on teachers is necessary to make sure that one is not slacking off but the way it's done isn't very good. I don't really know a good way of doing it though. I agree that someone you don't know shouldn't be evaluating you but I also think a person who does know you should be evaluating a teacher as well because of potential bias. So it seems there are many conflicting elements that school systems need to consider to be fair. It's so frustrating!
