Teacher Evaluations

Lately in class, we have been talking about teacher evaluations. We have been discussing which methods and ideas we think would be most beneficial for the student as well as the teacher. After our discussion groups on Monday, I realized there will never be a perfect way to evaluate the performance of a teacher. We were all able to find some flaws in the groups ideas. Personally, I think you will never be able to please everyone while performing teacher evaluations. Someone is always going to say there is something wrong with what is being done. However, I do not think teacher evaluations should be eliminated. I believe everyone should be evaluated and given constructive criticism. It is important to know your strengths and weaknesses in order to improve. Going into early childhood education I knew rigorous evaluations were in my future. I know I will plan accordingly in order to be successful in my future evaluations. I have found an article that talks about the gains that have been accomplished through teacher evaluations. http://economix.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/10/17/a-new-look-at-teacher-evaluations-and-learning/?_r=0. Everyone in their careers, will be evaluated throughout their jobs in some way. In my opinion, evaluations are a necessary tool in order to be the best at your career.

  1. I think that it is a great idea to eliminate teacher evaluations. We always focus so much on how to criticize a teacher or a student by telling them how poorly they are doing, but I think that it would be hugely beneficial to be constructive about the feedback that is given. Haven't we learned in our other classes that when dealing with children we need to focus on the positive things, like avoiding saying "DON'T run across the street" we should say "please walk across the street". We constantly focus on the bad side of things. Maybe if we were more positive and more productive people would respond better and the classroom would be a better learning community.
