The Harlem Zone

After learning about The Harlem Zone in class I decided to look up more information about it online. I think it is such an interesting concept that served a lot of people really well. I found this article( http://www.theatlanticcities.com/politics/2012/08/why-hasnt-harlem-childrens-zone-been-replicated-even-without-obamas-help/2968/ ) which talks about why a program so successful hasn't been replicated anywhere else. This came up a little bit in the video we watched, but after thinking about it I really wondered if everyone sees this to be working why they don't try to implement in other places. The article talks about how Canada got started with The Harlem Zone and the people involved in the success. Most of the Zone's budget is from private donors and foundations. This makes me think that is why the program hasn't been replicated, because of money, but at the same time this shouldn't be about money, but about children's future. There is an obvious growth in the kids that are participating in this school, and I know everyone would like to see that same growth in kids across the country.

  1. It makes me somewhat frustrated that money plays such a big part in this. I'm very impressed with Canada's Harlem Zone and think there are so many cities that could benefit from this. It's frustrating to see that even though something like this appears to be working we can replicate it due to money.
