After this weeks class and talking a lot more about charter schools. It made me want to do some researching into the whole charter school idea. With everything comes the good and then there are always the bad.
The idea of charters schools of creating an environment were the learning is being recreated in a struggling place is great, but there are many side affects to having these types of schools. When these schools are thought of, it takes current schools that is struggling in the academics closes them. These schools can be very difficult to get into causing the lottery affect we talked about in class. Is it fair to the students to be told they cant go to the current school because its being closed? Id it fair that they wont get to go to school with their neighborhood friends anymore as well? We learned that the chance of getting into these charter schools that take over there old schools is very difficult, but then that leaves these student to go else were. Sometime that means they will have to travel farther away from their house, which means the student would have to be up earlier. The toll of this can really hurt a child's education, going to a new school just because theirs closed. Its a good idea to be able to get rid of teachers when they aren't doing a good job of teaching, but this means that their job is not safe. This can cause the teacher to stress to much on teaching to the test something we talked about earlier this year. Charter schools do give many children a better education than what they were receiving. These schools bring in many resources that were once not available there before.
http://charterschoolinfo.org/pros-and-cons-of-charter-schools This article gives great points both ways for and against charter schools and has made me come to my conclusion on my thoughts of charter schools.
After thinking about charter schools compared to public schools, I am not for one more than the other. The only thing I do not like about charter schools is, that they say they are a public school but they can not accept everyone. Which kind of school do you prefer, and for what reasons?
