Harlem Children's Zone
As with charter schools, Harlem Children's Zone wasn't something I had heard of before we talked about it in class. From what I gathered, this was a real success. However, it got me thinking: why are there not many more schools based off of Canada's idea? Looking at the students and how they've closed the gap between black students and white students, it made me wonder why there weren't more schools like this that were just as successful. This article I found, http://www.heritage.org/research/reports/2013/03/assessing-the-harlem-childrens-zone, speculates possible reasons why other Harlem Children's Zone replicates haven't been replicated or if they have, why they haven't been as successful. Perhaps Canada's idea and success just can't be reproduced again and again. Or maybe, the right people to be in charge of these types of schools haven't been given the opportunity yet. Either way, Canada has done amazing work with the kids involved in his pipeline system and I hope it keeps going in this direction to the point where it keeps expanding to include more kids.
