Charter School
What is a charter school? That is what I wondered the whole time everyone was bringing them up. I never have heard of a charter school and obviously never seen one. In the movie we watched on Wednesday, The Lottery, showed me how people felt about charter schools. While I sat in class watching that movie, it made me wonder why some people had such strong feelings against them. They are trying to better education in America. These schools show up most in the poverty area, or schools that are currently struggling. The part of the movie with the assembly of people speaking there thoughts was very interesting. It was so shocking that some people were so dead set against having a charter school. I understand they don't want their current school to be shut down and their neighborhood to be split up. I still am not sure on my feelings about charter schools every since we started talking about them in class. After reading this debate of both side on this website, http://www.debate.org/opinions/are-charter-schools-a-good-idea, my thoughts are still undecided. Both sides made many good points about the funding and the limitations that some of the charter schools do. Makes me wonder if charter schools are bad? Do they limit the kind of students they allow, and if they do begin to be too much to handle do they let them go. In the teachers point of view, its more dangerous because you could lose your job at any time, if you are not teaching the best way that the school believes. So what are your thoughts on Charter schools? Are they good or bad?

ReplyDeleteI was unsure how I felt about charter schools for a while like you. I personally have negative thoughts on charter schools after watching The Lottery and reading my own articles because of what I have learned about their admission process. I think it leaves many students out and does not provide an equal opportunity for everyone. I think this outweighs the ways they are trying to "better education in America." I wouldn't exactly say they are "bad" schools, I just think there is room for a lot of improvement in that system.
