Lotteries
Recently in class, we have been discussing the topic of the lottery. Before this class, I knew nothing about lotteries. I had no clue that parents were hoping and praying that their child beats out hundreds of other kids by the luck of a draw. To me, this is heartbreaking. To see parents just want the best for their children and try to provide the right education for them to make them successful and not get that spot in the school just makes me think what is the purpose of these lotteries. I first realized exactly what a lottery was when we were watching the movie Won't Back Down. Seeing them in a room full of hopeful students and only having a limited number of spots in that school. You could see in the moms face have this was something she needed for her kid, and watching her face when her daughter did not get that spot was just heartbreaking. To think that that actually happens, makes me think is there a better way to manage these lotteries? I have found an interesting article about how charter schools have been starting to make changes to their lottery system. http://www.gazette.net/article/20130904/NEWS/130909820/charter-school-makes-changes-to-lottery-process&template=gazette. I think more schools with lotteries should look back on the year and fix some of the problems that happened with their lottery like this charter school did.

I had never heard of charter schools previous to this class either and also found the images and thoughts of them heartbreaking. I think many times parents don't care what kind of education their children get so to see these parents investing all their hope and prayers into their children's opportunities and futures and being disappointed is so sad.
