Where are the other Harlem Children's Zones?

Obama said in 2007 that he wanted to create 20 replications of the Harlem Children's Zone  throughout the United States and yet we are all still waiting for this to happen.

http://www.theatlanticcities.com/politics/2012/08/why-hasnt-harlem-childrens-zone-been-replicated-even-without-obamas-help/2968/

This article discusses some key factors about why such a replication has not yet occurred. "Obama has pursued looks more like a traditional Great Society Democratic approach: his administration has spent billions of dollars on direct aid to poor people, mostly working-poor families." An alternative to spending money"haphazardly" in poor neighborhoods, there was a blueprint in place to help construct an area that, over time, would benefit that city greatly. My personal opinion is that America is a want now-get now society. We want to see results the second we decide to put a program into place. We are not the type of people who are willing to sit back and be patient even though we know in the long run that it is what will be most beneficial. Canada has proven, that with dedication, patience, and a lot of planning that a rough neighborhood can in fact turn around and produce children who have received a high quality education.

The article also states that a huge downfall to getting many of these other programs off the ground is the lack of such a positive and influential leader such as Canada.  His drive and dedication to the children and their futures truly makes his program soar and gives so many people hope for their community and children's' lives.

  1. It would be nice to have educational success country-wide. I don't know how to "test" that the education is good without testing though, haha.

  2. I think you are absolutely correct when you said we were a want now-get now society. I also agree if we took more time and patience and put some more thought into our ideas we could really turn some rough neighborhoods around and really help out students.

  3. It would be great to see more schools modelled after Canada's Harlem Children Zone. I understand that they're trying to replicate it but they can't seem to be as successful as Canada was because they don't know the exact formula for his success. Maybe they should just recruit him to do the blueprints and planning for other schools as well just to start out?
