If we were given one million
dollars to create a new school by Professor Glassman, we would create our ideal
public school. Our school would be up to date with current technology making
information easily accessible and learning more fun. Our goal would be to have
smart boards in almost every classroom and ipads or laptops for every teacher.
The students would have access to computers or ipads with apps and programs
that promote learning and creativity. Our school would teach students how to
use programs like Word and PowerPoint early on because we think this knowledge
is important in this time. Our classrooms would be small so students get the
attention they deserve from their teacher. Our school would have some general
courses to take (such as Spanish or another language, which we feel should be
taken at an earlier age than most schools do) but students would get a choice
in majority of the classes they are going to take depending on their interests.
Our teachers would have some standards they have to meet but basically teach
their classes in whatever way allows them to be most creative and generate
student interest. We decided our students would be tested in some way every
nine weeks including at the beginning of the school year, but these tests would
not count as a grade. They would just be for the teacher to access their
students and see what information they are actually absorbing. Students would
be given options on how they want to complete projects and assignments. With
extra money, we would have frequent field trips for classes that may learn
about their topics better through hands on activities or observing. Some other
things we would want our school to have would be uniforms to reduce bullying, healthy
lunches, and no tenure (maybe after 10 years). This might not be realistic, but
we can dream… right?
