Why do I want to be a teacher?

Over the past year and a half, since I decided that I wanted to major in education, I am constantly pestered about why I would ever want to go into a profession going the direction that education is going. I hoped that taking more specific education classes this semester as I delved deeper into my major would help to improve my atittude and answer about why I did want to become a teacher, however, they did the opposite. I have been so scared and turned off by many of my classes, professors and peers and really had to dig deep and decided if, and why I had the urge to become a teacher. I then realized it all began when I decided I wanted to be a coach, and I realized coaching is teaching. Teaching others sportsmanship, skills and a specific game in depth. The reason I wanted to be a coach is because all of my coaches had incredible impacts on my life throughout high school and I figured out that coaches and teachers have the ability and situational advantage to change the lives of large amount of teenagers, at their most impactful age, daily. All I want to do is just that, the money, the time the job requires and all of the other elements that many people complain about currently are not what matters to me.

  1. I can definitely relate. I've always thought I wanted to be a teacher before actually taking the classes. This class especially makes me realize how crappy the school system is. I still want to make an impact in students' lives but I decided to change my major to school counseling-- and even that still scares me!
