Stand and Deliver
This week we watched the movie Stand and Deliver. I have seen the movie multiple times, but watching it this time it really made me think about the purpose for taking the test and what we get out of them. In the movie, the students are all studying and preparing to take the AP test in Calculus. They are all working hard and it teaches them that they can really do anything if they try and work hard for it. On Wednesday, we discussed what happens after you get your results back. You asked us the purpose of working so hard and putting all your effort into something to just get back the work for a paper that has an A on it. I think the purpose of working hard for something that may not effect you in the future is to show yourself that you are smart enough to complete something and get a good grade out of it. It shows you that you have the ability to achieve anything if you have the motivation and dedication to work hard. The article I found is about trying to decide if special education students should be taking general test. I chose this article because of the effects that special education students might get out of taking general tests, such as them getting a confidence boost to really show them that no matter what they can do whatever everyone else does if they just work hard at it. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/08/27/arne-duncan-special-education_n_3819045.html

I agree with you in the fact that getting a good score on a test can boost your confidence, but what about the opposite? I received a poor grade on a Spanish essay I had to write this passed week and it really made me feel like I'm wasting my time and that I am a failure. I think grades can either boost you or break you, but there's no way to determine which it will do. Sometimes you think you do well and you don't and other times you think you do poorly and you do great! It's tough stuff.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with the idea of test scores boosting your confidence, and grades you worked hard to earn being something to be prideful of. However, I have been on the other side, worked my ass of for a poor test grade and felt like dropping out of school completely. I don't think there's any way to ever finish this argument for good unfortunately, due to the wide variety of characteristics shared in children in schools throughout the country.
