I know there has been a lot of posts recently about charter schools and the movie " Lottery" that we watched today in class but this topic still greatly fascinates me. Like many in our class I didn't understand what a charter school was nor had I heard of one. I didn't understand the extent that people went and go to, to try and get into a charter school. One thing I really found interesting in the movie today was the rallies of people that it brought together. People were literally lining the streets protesting having their school become a charter and others were for the movement. Seeing all this really put into focus how appreciative I should be for the education that I have. Some people are not given this simple opportunity, the opportunity to have a good education. I remember in high school and middle school when there were always those kids that hated school and didn't want to be there and then you have some of these children that were in the movie that are just dying to go to a good school. That is all their parents want for them is a good education and they have to leave it up to a lottery.
I found this article that I attached that talks about charter schools more and goes over many of the things we have talked about already in class. I think many of the things that are considered pros and cons to charter schools is what the rallies of people hit hard on. In the movie today one lady said how she was not going to let the school her child went to be taken over by a charter school. This surprised me I had no idea people got so upset about charter school taking their school over but I think I have a better understanding of it now. This movie showed me how hard it can be to get into a charter school and if your school becomes one as a student and parent you have to decide what you are going to do.
One point that is article brought up that we haven't discussed yet is the fact that some charter schools can specialize in different areas of school. For example in the article one school in Massachusetts specializes in math and science since most of the students there want to get a degree that has something to do with math or science. I found this very interesting because these students were able to spend long periods of time in these subjects their senior year because this school was a charter school. The school could determine what the standards were. This in turn allowed these students to focus on what they were going to be studying in college and getting their degree towards! What do you guys think? http://www.masslive.com/news/index.ssf/2013/07/as_charter_schools_grow_educat.html
I think that it's a definite advantage that charter schools can cater to the interests of the student and not have to worry about things that regular public schools have to worry about.
