why lotteries?

http://www.politicsdaily.com/2010/07/14/charter-school-lottery-gambles-with-kids-futures-and-often-l/ is an article I found that discusses the politics of the movie The Lottery which we watched in class today. The biggest part that stood out to me, and the topic they discussed right from the beginning and finished with at the end, was the unfairness of actually having a lottery. These poor kids and parents are just looking for a solid education in which will reward their children with a better life. These kind of movies show the lives of people that want something that every child should be able to get, and it is heartbreaking that it is such a struggle for them. I wish this country could figure out a way to actually achieve the education goals that every politician talks about. It seems that education, while in my opinion the most important part of a person's life, is severely underrated as a part of society. Everyone says that every child deserves a proper education, and they are right, but why is it so difficult to achieve this? Why are we resorting to lotteries determining the future of a child?

  1. I agree that it is really sad that so many children's future educations are in the hands on a lottery system and most of them are not going to get the outcome that their families are hoping for. The video mentioned how much money is spent on building prisons compared to education. They also said that the individuals in charge of building these prisons look at how well 4th grade inner city children perform in schools and base how much space they are going to need in the impending years on these stats. Maybe if there was more money spent of education and less on building prisons, there would not be such a need for better teachers and schools.
