Cheating

The majority of individuals have probably cheated at one point or another. Even some who have not cheated before, may have done it unknowingly. I know some professors who post their quizzes via Carmen, ask their students to complete these quizzes by themselves without the help of anyone else. Yet, we get together in small groups and complete the quizzes together. Some professors may view that as cheating when the students doing it may feel that they are collaborating with one another to get an assignment done. But then it makes you wonder where are we supposed to draw the line. How many of the doctors that are supposed to save our lives have cheated on a test while they were in medical school? People would take more notice if those individuals admitted to cheating at some point.

This article talks about the epidemic of cheating in schools and colleges across the U.S. It states that according to a survey of 23,000 students, 51% of them admit to cheating. Another statistic stated that 74% of students have admitted to copying homework from another student. The article goes on to list the three most common excuses as to why we cheat:

  • “It’s no big deal.” They try to minimize the consequences.
  • “I just got a little help—that’s not really cheating.” They euphemistically label it or even to refuse to recognize it as cheating.
  • “Everyone does it.” “The teacher is terrible, so I have to cheat.” They blame others.
Are students actually learning anything if they feel like they need to cheat?

  1. I definitely don't think the students are really learning if they have to cheat. It does get frustrating to hear about people cheating and then getting decent grades. Then those who don't cheat may not get as high of grades. Sometimes it is hard to do the right thing and not cheat while you continuously see the results that cheaters get.

  2. I don't think anybody learns from cheating. Even though I'm sure we all can admit to cheating once or twice in our lives and have tried to justify it with some excuse. I agree it's crazy to think how many people have cheated in situations you would have never suspected, such as like you mentioned, doctors
