So Many Variables!

It's so hard to determine why people bully.  The article, http://www.bullyingstatistics.org/content/why-do-people-bully.html, made me realize how broad bullying is.  For instance, the article gave a few reasons why people bully.  It mentioned reasons like cultural causes, institutional, social issues, family issues, personal issues, wanting power, provocative victims, and more! As a teacher or any person concerned with preventing bullying, how do we know where to start?  There are so many factors that could be influencing the bullies' behavior. As a society what can we do to prevent these influential factors?

There are also many types of bullying: cyber, text, workplace, school, verbal, bullying parents, physical, harassment.  Which one is the most extreme? When is the "right" time to step in?  Since bullying can occur in so many places, how can we maintain a safe environment for our students?

  1. I think that bullying stems from the self and how the person internalize things that they are feeling or may have experienced and then project it onto others. If we give children with these problems resources that can help them, I think bullying can decrease in its numbers. I think this article does a good job in breaking down possible factors, now we need to figure out ways to prevent these factors from being exposed to a child. As far as the different types of bullying, technology has really made it possible to bully anyone at anytime and that's why its so dangerous. However, I think its the one where the victim gets the most control in. To avoid seeing the hurtful things, simply do not use the site, get a new email, new number, etc. I know that it's not favorable to have to go through all these changes, but it can be lifesaving for a lot.

  3. I made a similar post as you and also think that it's getting harder to help students who are affected by bullying. Bullying really is a very broad subject because each situation has a different story with different individuals. People also handle their problems differently, whether it's expressing their emotions through violence and criticism (the bully), or enduring the hardship and keeping quiet about the situation (the victim). With that being said there is no correct way of resolving the situation, and that can be very frustrating for students, teachers, and parents
