Before doing this blog post i thought it would be a good idea to look at bullying from a different perspective. We always talk about how teachers need to stand up for students and help put an end to bullying, but what if the teachers are also in on the torment. Oftentimes teachers will embarrass students in front of other classmates. A common example of this is the dunce cap. There was just an example of teacher bullying in one of my classes this semester. My professor put up on the power point an example of plagiarism in a paper. She used an example of a student in class and the name was clearly visible on the slide. She said "If I were this person, I would be worried. This has a high percentage of plagiarism". As far as I am aware a teacher is NOT allowed to do this. The student whose paper it was was sitting in the front row and quickly raised her hand saying there is no way that it was correct and the professor asked to talk to her after class. I just don't think that it was at all appropriate to use a real example of a student in class and if that is what the teacher chooses to do then at least show the student's name!
So often bullying is pinpointed on the students, but I think it is crucial for everyone involved in any sort of bullying to be confronted.
That is so terrible! I know it's college and it's not like we're little kids anymore, but that still gives her no right to do that. I actually read this and could think of several situations in which the teacher was just as much of a bully as the students. It's may be a tough aspect to consider, but it might just be the truth!
ReplyDeleteGreat post. You are right that no one really sees teachers as bullies because we are so focused in society to teach teachers how to prevent it and do something about it if they see it rather than them doing it. Very interesting.
ReplyDeleteThis is a terrible story. I have witnessed teachers taking part in bullying in the classroom as well. A couple of my teachers in high school didn't do much to stop the little things that were in fact bullying, but added in to them. This is just so sad, yet it happens more often that people think.
